Approximately 1.5 million people of all ages in the UK have a learning disability, over 200,000 of who have a severe disability.
People with a learning disability have reduced ability to understand new or complex information or to learn new skills.
Learning disabilities are many and varied. Some people live independently without much support while others require 24 hour a day care. Some have impaired spoken or written communication skills, or find it hard to process information.
It is therefore important not to make assumptions about what a person with a learning disability can do or understand.
